Cocodona, Altitude Training, and Livestreams
TOGETHER WITH
Happy Tuesday, trail friends. This week, we feature a collection of photos from the Cocodona 250-miler. Howie Stern, Anastasia Wilde, and Scott Rokis spent five days documenting this rugged endurance challenge through Arizona and captured the essence of 200+ mile events. And in the DFL, we climb a 1,000 foot rock face with our bare hands and feet… and Ben Stiller.
What’s it like to train at 14,107 feet and above? Emelie Forsberg and her family sent a dispatch after three weeks in the Himalayas (?: 2). “I don’t have a training plan,” she said, “I just want to see how my body responds to the altitude and have fun exploring the environments.”
Reminder: We’re producing the Broken Arrow Livestream beginning on June 16th! Have questions about what goes into a broadcast like this? Email news@ultrasignup.com and we’ll answer it on our Instagram! (?: 3)

On May 1, 194 runners set out from Black Canyon City, Arizona, to run 250 miles north to Flagstaff. The athletes had 125 hours to cover the Cocodona 250 course, which includes nearly 40,000 feet of elevation gain. Professional photographers Howie Stern, Anastasia Wilde, and Scott Rokis were there all week to document the trials and tribulations of this immense challenge.
Drop Bags, DNFs, and Barefoot Shoes on Techy Terrain
On this week’s episode of The Trailhead, Corrine and Buzz ask a tricky question: Who’s the most important runner in the sport?
Then, we hear from Heather Balogh Rochfort about handling the highs and lows of ultrarunning. See more of how to put your best foot forward in Heather’s article, “How to not DNF a 100-miler.”
Then, Buzz answers real runner questions about knowing when you are ready for an ultramarathon and whether your shoe choice is slowing you down over technical terrain.
Finally, we want to know why YOU are passionate about running trails. Email trailhead@ultrasignup.com with your why for a chance to be featured in a future episode.

Runners obsess over what shoes fit the best and give them the most control and comfort, but often overlook something just as important to comfort and performance: SOCKS! Socks play a huge role in keeping runners dry, warm, cool, and comfortable on their runs. Sidas has three lines of technical and innovative socks that maximize ventilation, reduce friction on the foot, and provide ample cushioning to reduce foot fatigue and injury.
Learn about the differences between the Sidas Running Socks and see which one suits you best, then pick up a few pairs so you can be pain-free and comfortable on your runs! Use promo code TRAILHEAD20 for 20% off at Sidas.com

? Quoted: “The financials of trail-running races get interesting around 2,000 participants,” Dave Beeche, former senior vice president of IRONMAN Group, told Doug Mayer. “That’s your rough benchmark of where you can make a profit. And when you get to 5,000, you’re making some good money.”
