Happy Tuesday runners,
The racing season has already begun but this weekend’s upcoming Black Canyon Ultras in Arizona have come to mark the unofficial start to the competitive racing season. The point to point 100K route travels from high desert chaparral scrub forest to the classic saguaro cactus studded Sonoran Desert landscape outside Phoenix.
The race is a Golden Ticket race where the top three men and women will earn automatic entry into the Western States 100, it’s also an inaugural member of the new World Trail Majors. The 100K race takes place Saturday followed by a 60K point to point on Sunday.
This year’s event promises cool desert weather, with a chance of rain Saturday and runners likely to start the event in sub-freezing temperatures due to the start line’s 4000ft elevation. With a stacked line-up of fast runners, it’s sure to be an exciting weekend.
🌎 The Olympic trials marathon took place in Orlando, FL to decide which men and women will represent the US at the Paris Olympics this summer. Fiona O’Keeffe came out on top in a stacked women’s field (📸:1) with a 2:22:10 in her marathon debut, joining her on the womens’ podium was Emily Sisson (2:22:42) and Dakotah Lindwurm (2:25:31) earning three spots on the Paris team.
❄️ By foot, bike, and ski, over 100 athletes completed the Arrowhead 135last week, one of the world’s toughest ultra events through the deep winter of Minnesota. Nick Nygaard (📸:2) was the first finisher by bike and overall in 24:37. Alan Chapman was the first finisher on foot in 34:42. Full Results.
💨 The first event in the Running Up For Air (📸:3) series took place in Salt Lake City. The endurance event series is a fundraising event focused on dialogue around air quality issues in the Great Salt Lake Basin. Learn More.
