Barkley on ESPN?
TOGETHER WITH
Happy Tuesday, trail friends. Though I’ve never gotten in, I’ve at least been to the Barkley Marathons, “the race that eats its young.” So, I can assure you, the hype is real, and the feats of endurance… astounding. This past week many of us were glued to our computers, wearing out the spring on our F5 keys to see if Keith had any updates. We have a laugh about that in the DFL and in our featured piece, Jared Beasley brings us Jesse Mullen’s story of resilience and adaptation.

THE WEEKEND COOL DOWN
MARATHONS?
And with the light of his cigarette, Gary Cantrell set the runners off on their way (?: 1). The 2023 Barkley Marathons saw Jasmin Paris make it farther than any woman to date, and three intrepid athletes finished the entire brutal course. * One of our writers, Jared Beasley, covered it for The New York Times.
Krissy’s crew (?: 3) put on another running of the Pacific Northwest classic, the Chuckanut 50km. Runners were rewarded with views of Mt Baker. Clare Gallagher and Adam Merry took home wins.
Want more racing? Check out iRunFar’s recap, and these upcoming events that are still open for registration.
In October, Jess Mullen ran her fastest 100-mile race in a career of more than 160 ultra finishes. But in her quest to enter the 100-hundreds club, she was forced to reckon with an insidious but all too common issue affecting many female athletes… osteoporosis.
“I’ve created this painting, this athletic body that I’m proud of,” she told Jared Beasley. “Now, I feel like I have to set it on fire.”
