1899 Mountaineers, a new partnership with Like the Wind, and everything we’re reading, listening to, and watching this week.
Happy Tuesday, trail friends. For many of us the clocks moving ahead for daylight savings time is the reminder that spring training is upon us. It’s time to get your plan in order for the summer race season and begin to enjoy the longer daylight hours and warmer weather on the trails.
Our featured piece this week comes from writer Eric Sutliff and our friends at Like the Wind magazine, about the lessons learned from an epic battle with peanut butter. And in the DFL, we color in some black and white video footage of climbers on Mont Blanc from 1899.

THE WEEKEND COOL DOWN
Two new USATF National 50k Road Champions were crowned this past weekend in New York. Andrea Pomaranski pulled out front and stayed out front of the competition on the 10-loop course through Heckscher State Park, finishing in 3 hours, 7 minutes (📸: 1). On the men’s side, Kallin Khan surged late in the race to take the win in 2:52 (📸: 2).
Jeff Browning won his third race of the year at the Mesquite Canyon 50-miler (📸: 3), while Deserae Clark won the women’s race.
Julie and Simon Freeman have decided to do the hard thing. In this age of quick-hit media, they have been creating a beautiful print magazine about the sport they love. Their stories live in the physical space, but we thought we’d help them bring a select few to the online world and our readers here at UltraSignup. So, we’ve partnered with them to publish a selection of their best work.
Becoming a Pro, Taming Dragons, & New England Gnar

Corrine interviews Jenn Hughes, former editor-in-chief of UltraSignup News about her experience facing dragons and searching for joy during the blizzard year of Tor des Géants. You can read Jenn’s article “How to Tame a Dragon” at UltraSignup News.
Then, Buzz interviews ultrarunner Jeff Colt about the difference between New England trails and Colorado trails, seeking balance, and how the pandemic actually helped him get to where he is today.
