Trailhead: Reuse & Recycle is Now NnormalUltraSignup
Endurance Insanity Defined
Happy Tuesday, trail friends. There is so much happening in trail running these days it’s hard to keep up. This week alone we have world records, course records, Golden Tickets, new sponsors, and ground-breaking recycling programs. Let’s get to it!
Fresh off his win at the Jed Smith Ultras (and narrowly missing the masters American 50K record), Peter Bromka writes about the perceived line between good, hard training and insanity. And in the DFL, we finally have a place to send used gear (that isn’t the landfill).

THE WEEKEND COOL DOWN
The team at Aravaipa Running put on another world-class event this weekend at the Black Canyon 100k in Arizona (replete with drone shots and a live stream that rivaled any big city marathon coverage). It was the second North American opportunity for fast athletes to earn a Western States Golden Ticket. Keely Henninger took home the win in a new course record time of 8 hours and 45 minutes (📸: 1). On the men’s side Anthony Costales also set a new course record time, finishing in 7 hours and 32 minutes (📸: 3).

💥 Burst Work: Research published in December shows that tiny bursts of exercise throughout the day are associated with significant reductions in disease risk. So pick up the pace on your walk, sprint up a few stairs, or race the groceries into the house for some real longevity benefits.
💙 Best on Feet: The team at iRunFar takes a crack at distilling the more than 200 trail shoe models available into a short list of the five best. (And don’t forget to recycle your last pair with Nnormal.)
👟 No Lost Shoes: With 20 billion pairs of shoes being made each year, what happens to all those shoes after they are discarded? A film by Max Romey and Nnormal explores the issue and proposes a solution. ⬇️
DFL (DEAD FREAKIN’ LAST)
⬆️ A Better Way: The problem of what to do with old gear that you no longer use is a vexing one. Until now, you’d reluctantly throw it away and try not to think about the landfill or the remote beach that it washed up on. The team at Nnormal has a new solution, called the No Trace Program, that breathes new life into your gear. Simply mail Nnormal your used shoes, outdoor clothing, or beat up skis from any brand, regardless of the product condition, and they’ll repair or recycle it to give it a second life.
