Happy 4th, trail friends! We hope you have a chance to get out and celebrate your independence today with a run.
In our featured piece, we bask in the afterglow of Western States with photographer Anastasia Wilde, who tells the story of the 2023 race, through images. On the Trailhead podcast, we hear who told Courtney Dauwalter it’s time to run for office. And in the DFL, we look at how different sports players sprint.
Are women “made” for ultrarunning? Camille Herron thinks so (📸: 2). “We’re breaking men’s records,” she told Runner’s World. “More women need to know that. We are made to endure.”
The Cirque Series of races kicked off their year at Snowbird in Utah. Nearly nine miles and 3,566 feet of elevation gain later and race winner Christian Allen (📸: 3) was $1,000 richer. Janelle Lincks won the women’s race.
In FKT News: It looks like John Kelly set a new FKT on Vermont’s 273-mile Long Trail in a time of 4 days, 4 hours, and 25 minutes! Check his tracker here.

Western States is our oldest trail 100 mile ultramarathon. It begins at the base of the Palisades Tahoe ski resort in California, then travels 100.2 miles and 18,000 feet of uphill before arriving at the Placer High School track in Auburn. This year the race celebrated its 50th anniversary. We had photographer Anastasia Wilde on course and she did a masterful job of telling the story of the race through photos.
“Courtney wasn’t running out of her mind,” said Corrine in this week’s episode, “but her running was making us lose our minds.”
This week, Buzz and Corrine talk Western States 2023, and contextualize Courtney Dauwalter rewriting the record books.
“You’re my hero,” Jeff Colt told her. “Run for office!”
Then, Corrine interviews USN writer Heather Balogh Rochfort about her article, “Managing taper madness,” on how to stay sane in the days leading up to your big race. “Have a backup plan for your backup plan for your backup’s plan,” she says.
And Buzz answers questions about salt pills and running in rattlesnake country.
🔫 Reach for the Sky: As if he didn’t have enough to worry about while running across the African continent, British runner Russell Cook was mugged at gunpoint and robbed of a “couple cameras, 2 iphones, all of our cash, and passports.”
🪂 Journalists sometimes “parachute in” to a place and a subculture that they know nothing about in an effort to explain what they find to the general public. Here, a Brooklyn-based writer tries to make sense of “the deranged scene” at a 24-hour race in Sharon Hills, Pennsylvania.
